What is a Turkish towel?

Turkish towels, or Pestemal, are hand-embroidered cotton or linen towels that have been used in ceremonial bathing rites in hamams, or Turkish baths, since the 17th century. Coveted for their beautiful designs, extreme absorbency and ability to stay light when wet, as the Ottoman Empire grew, so did their popularity. We're proud to import our towels from Bursa, Turkey – a Unesco World Heritage Site – and one of the original centers of textile trade.

What's so great about a Turkish towel?

Turkish towels are amazing because unlike traditional towels, they're: lightweight even when wet, super absorbent, fast-drying, compact, multi-functional, and eco-friendly. You can throw a Turkish towel in your bag and be ready for whatever adventure may come your way with a simple rinse under a tap between uses. Turkish towels make stylish bath, beach and pool towels, kitchen and bar towels, gym and yoga towels, sarongs and scarves, picnic blankets and table cloths, lawn concert and stadium seating. Available in a multitude of vibrant colors, they're not only practical, but also allow you to show your team spirit, making them ideal for dorms and camps, teams and clubs.

How do I care for my towel?

Your Turkish towels will continue to improve over time - becoming softer and more absorbent - with just a little bit of TLC. While they're color safe and won't bleed or fade, we recommend a cold soak prior to their initial use. Cotton is not intrinsically absorbent and this will "break in" the fibers. For maintenance, simply machine wash in cold water and tumble dry on low heat. Alternatively, feel free to hand wash and line dry. Do not use bleach - instead we recommend adding a ¼ cup (60 ml) of baking soda and 1 cup of white vinegar to your wash. Do not use dryer sheets as these inhibit absorbency. While no one particularly enjoys ironing, a quick press with a warm iron will make your towels look especially fantastic!

What happens if you're out of stock after I've already placed an order?

Obviously, we'll do our best to avoid this, and to rectify the situation if it does happen. If we're unable to offer you the same product at a reasonable delay, we'll try to offer you a similar product at the same, or a better price. If you're not satisfied with our suggested resolution, we'll offer you a merchandise credit. Our goal is to make every customer happy, every time!

How should I reuse my old towels now that I've discovered Turkish towels?

Now that you've experienced Turkish towels, we realize you're going to have an excess of old, used towels that you'll want to dispose of and replace. If, like us, you're not the crafty sort who can repurpose them into clever stuffed animals or other pieces of art, may we recommend you donate them to your local animal shelter where they're always appreciated? In Cape May, please contact:
